This island location, part of the Mascarene Islands, is a former French colony in the Indian Ocean. This overseas department has exactly the same status as European France's departments (similar to counties) and regions. The French Constitution provides that, in general, French laws and regulations (France's civil code, penal code, administrative law, social laws, and tax laws etc.) apply to French overseas departments and is in essence, part of France.
The Reunion Aquarium is a private organization that was founded in 2000. All the fish come from the Indian Ocean with the majority of the fish taken directly from their natural environment and some are used in breeding projects. Your visit will take you through all the different aquariums which contain a total of 164,000 gallons (620,000 liter) of seawater and represent the various undersea environments found off the coast of the island. As you visit the five different zones you will discover the diversity of the coral reefs, and the fragility of this ecosystem.
Hours of operation: Monday through Sunday 10.00 (10:00 am) to 18.00 (6:00 pm).
Admission: Adult (from 13 years old) €9.90, Senior €8.90, Children (4 to 12 years old) €6.90, Toddler (under 4) free. Various car parks surround the Marina.
Machine 1 is in the lobby by the ticket counter. They move the machines around so ask where they currently are. Uses €1 and 5cent coins per design. Designs all have a beaded border with 'St Gilles Les Bains':
