This island location, part of the Mascarene Islands, is a former French colony in the Indian Ocean. This overseas department has exactly the same status as European France's departments (similar to counties) and regions. The French Constitution provides that, in general, French laws and regulations (France's civil code, penal code, administrative law, social laws, and tax laws etc.) apply to French overseas departments and is in essence, part of France.
Kélonia is a public aquarium and observatory specializing in Marine turtles. It was built on the site of a former Turtle Ranch and purposes guided visits and educational workshops. Kélonia also participates in different research programs on marine turtles. These include migratory studies, monitoring populations, genetics, etc.
Hours of operation: Monday through Sunday 09.00 (9:00 am) to 18.00 (6:00 pm).
Admission: Adult €9, Seniors (over 65) and children 4 to 12 years old €6, Children under 4 years old are free. Plenty of free parking.
Machine 1 is in the gift shop. Uses €1 and 5cent coins per design. Designs all have a beaded border with 'Kélonia, Ile De La Reunion':
