Yodobashi-Akiba Shopping Center, Dragon Quest
Tokyo - Akihabara · Japan
This machine is no longer here. The listing stays up because collectors come back years later to check whether the one they remember was real.
From collectors
Outside the giant Yodobashi-Akiba department store in the Akihabara district, hundreds of gamers gather each day, crowd sourcing the hunt for rare creatures and virtual treasure.
They stand, packed together in a cordoned-off area reserved for them, as store employees attempt to keep the sidewalk clear, ushering the players behind safety barriers. Everyone is holding a Nintendo DS and playing this year's hottest new game: Dragon Quest IX.
The machine is by the glass entrance/exit door. When approaching from the Shinjuku-sanchome Station, the machine is off to the left of the main shopping center entrance, closer to the cafes. Costs 200 yen each; presses on blanks.
1/21/21: The girl at the information counter at Yodobashi-Akiba told me that the shop with the machine is not there anymore. It has moved to a new location a few blocks away.
