Cross in the Woods is a Catholic shrine that was declared a national shrine by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on September 15, 2006. With the largest crucifix in the world (31 feet high for the statue) and it has become one of the most famous and most frequently visited shrines in Michigan. The highlight of the shrine is a large wooden cross and bronze figure of Christ by sculptor Marshall Fredericks. The site also includes outdoor and indoor churches, numerous smaller shrines, and a nun doll museum. The Cross in the Woods is open 365 days a year and the Church built at this location holds Masses every day, year round.
During winter the gift shop is only open Friday to Sunday and I think Monday. Sometime in April it reopens daily.
The machine is in the gift shop. Right by the entrance. Designs have the shop name on the back of the pennies and are:
1) Corpus/Crucifix
2) Holy Family
3) Serenity Prayer
4) Guardian Angel
5/29/2026 machine is in the gift shop, 2 of the designs (cross and angel) are rolling long on copper.
The gift shop is to the left side of the building, on the basement level. If you go through the front door and through the church, there is a maze of halls and steps to get to the gift shop.
